Thank you for helping us Light the Night

042
As you know The Nerdery’s been raising money for the Light the Night Walk in support of our friend and colleague Bill Brown, who lost his son and wife in the last year, both to leukemia. We set our goal at $10k, and most people here thought it was a lofty goal, but we surpassed it with two days to spare, raising a total of $12,703.57.

Terri Dahlberg, who helped organize The Nerdery’s participation in the walk, said Target Field was impressive and that The Nerdery crew got to meet former Minnesota Twin and Hall of Famer Rod Carew, who presented the team with a plaque. Carew lost his daughter Michelle to Leukemia when she was in her 20s.

“I’m just extremely grateful to the employees of The Nerdery for their support – both financial and as participants – in our efforts to reach and surpass the goal of $10,000,” Terri said. “There was an abundance of team spirit and team pride present as we helped raise money to find a cure.”

Decision 2010: Tom Horner to visit Nerdery Monday morning

Gubernatorial candidate Tom Horner (Independent) will drop by The Nerdery Monday, September 27 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. to chat about the use of social media in campaigns and government, as well as interactive technology as a positive economic force in Minnesota.

The Nerdery is not getting political on you (or anyone), and we’ll make no endorsement (not that anyone’s seeking our endorsement). This is more of a listening tour for which we don’t have to leave The Nerdery. Agency partners, clients, friends of The Nerdery, passersby, and media are welcome.

Of course, Decision 2010 has sort of already come to pass here at The Nerdery. Back in July, voter turnout was over 90% of our staff in selecting representatives and leaders of our nine development committees: ActionScript; Development Tools; Expression Engine; Front-End Development; Mobile Development; .NET; PHP; UX/Design; and WordPress.

Nerdery development committees are comprised of developers – not managers – and elected members serve one-year terms during which they discuss and determine development best practices. Our development committee campaign had all the trimmings of an actual election – campaign signs, heated debates with grand promises, election judges, “I voted” stickers, shaking hands/kissing babies, and even calls to “throw the bums out!” of office. So yeah, The Nerdery takes the election process seriously. We realize the gig of Governor is, likewise, kind of a big deal, so we’ll hear Tom Horner out. Other candidates seeking to at least split the nerd vote are just as welcome to drop on by.

This week in Nerdery: Wine; WordPress and game dev groups; charitable walkers (and runners for Governor next week)

Tuesday, Sept. 21: Tonight’s the night for our Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Wine and Cheese Fundraiser, so RSVP or just crash the party. Every other Tuesday is also Game Night, so our board-game clubbers may be a bit tipsy from mingling with this evening’s wine-and-cheese crowd, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 22: For the first time, The Nerdery welcomes The Twin Cities chapter of The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) at 6 p.m. Baylor Wetzel, AI developer at Shikigami Games, will talk about PaperDoll Fashion Reaction, including unexpected difficulties he experienced making a simple clothing system, and how this project evolved from an Operation Flashpoint-based military training system for the Marines. Peter Eckert will also discuss the development of Warp the Form‘s latest iPhone game: Zogger! Please RSVP. Also, The Nerdery has its own upstart game development club – they’ll likely be listening in on the IGDA chatter.

Thursday, Sept 23: The MSP WordPress user group meetup 6:30-9 p.m., with discussion on BuddyPress basics, moving WordPress, and running WordPress locally on your computer. Please RSVP.

Any day now: Twins clinch division, set rotation for glorious postseason run.

Sunday, Sept 26: Light the Night Walk, Target Field, our team’s page below (please keep sending money – we’ll tell you when it’s enough): http://pages.lightthenight.org/mn/TwinCiti10/httpnerderycom

Hottest fundraiser yet

Lots of fiery peppers were consumed over lunch today – and lots of money for our Light the Night Walk team. We had 10 brave souls with stomachs of steel compete in the pepper eating contest.

Sgt. Pepper Eating Contest at The Nerdery from The Nerdery on Vimeo.

Here’s how the rounds went down:
Round 1 Yellow Chili 100-500 (Scoville Pepper Rating)
Round 2 Poblano 1000-2000
Round 3 Anaheim 2000-2500
Round 4 Jalapeno 2500-8000
Round 5 Hot Wax 5000-9000
Round 6 Serrano 8000-22,000
Round 7 Super 40,000-50,000
Round 8 Thai 50,000-100,000
Round 9 Orange Habanero 150,000-325,000
Round 10 Red Savina Habanero 350,000 – 375,000

Terri, who hosted the contest said people started dropping like flies at rounds 8 and 9 (for Brianna, who had some out of the office sponsors in need of official results, she got through round 9 before having to call it quits).

Nick bowed out after the first pepper of round 10. For the 2nd round 10, both Anand and Kai ate a whole pepper. The third round 10 they both ate another whole pepper (that’s three times with the Red Savina Habanero!) At that point we called it a tie so we wouldn’t have to call the paramedics.

Reminder: Tomorrow we spill the wine (you can still RSVP) and there’s still time to donate a buck or two to win an iPad.

Help fight cancer & win an iPad

The other night Ali and I were at a tavern having a PBR toast to our mad kickballin’ skills. After reflecting quite a bit on our victory, our thoughts turned to all the crazy things happening at The Nerdery to raise money for this Light the Night Charity Walk we’re doing at the end of the month. The walk is for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in support of Nerdery software development manager Bill Brown, and in memory of his son Matthew and wife Kate.

Lately we’ve been playing poker (for charity) and shoving quarters into the Nintendo arcade game cabinet (for charity) in the lunch room, cooking breakfast for everyone (for charity), and throwing pies in the faces of our elders (for charity, really). . . you know, just a typical week.

However, we’re only a couple weeks out from Light the Night and are still quite a bit away from our goal of raising $10,000. While drinking these frosty brews, our creative juices began flowing. Being the web experts we are at The Nerdery, we came to a never-tried-before conclusion on how to raise a boatload of money using the internet. SOCIAL MEDIA. LET’S GO VIRAL.

Okay — so this has been done before. But we thought we’d see if we can’t boost our numbers a little bit by enticing you to donate by giving away an iPad! (16GB Wifi iPad)

Anyway, here’s how you win:

  1. Donate a buck or two, or five, or ten, or twenty, or TWENTY ONE!

For each dollar you donate (and you can donate any amount you want), you will receive an entry to win the iPad! When donating, make sure to leave your twitter username in the donation form comments (it’s in the “Add Comment” section at the bottom, right above the “Donate Now” button).

  2. Tweet the message “I donated a buck or two to fight cancer & WIN AN iPad! http://j.mp/9UTsYr #ltn #the_nerdery”

That’s it! When you donate don’t forget to leave your twitter name in the comments so we can make sure you retweeted the message. We’ll draw the winner on Monday, September 27th after the Minneapolis Light the Night Walk has taken place. The lucky winner will receive a 16GB WiFi iPad. If you want, the winner will even get a call from yours truly, thanking you for donating to such a wonderful cause and congratulate you on your new procurement.

Face time with thrown pies

On this we can all agree: Nothing is funnier than pie-in-the-face. It somehow never gets old, and it brings us together as a people. Especially when such hilarity happens for a good cause. Today, Nerdery brass earned $1,154 (donated by staff) for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society just by providing their faces as target practice. Check out these slo-mo action shots captured by friend-of-The-Nerdery Mike Ross:

In support of Nerdery software development manager Bill Brown, and in memory of his son Matthew and wife Kate, The Nerdery team is over halfway to the goal of raising $10,000, and we’re still more than two weeks away from the September 26 Light the Night Walk at Target Center.

A couple separate fundraisers have been previously reported here, and there’s more to come. We’ll soon be launching a registration page for a wine-and-cheese tasting at The Nerdery the evening of September 21, so save the date, and if you have a bottle of wine you’d like to donate we’ll propose a toast to you.

Other fundraisers so far:

  • Waffle Tuesday: $205
  • Poker party: $485
  • S’Mores lunch: $20
  • Silent auction: $1440
  • Eggs & English bacon: $170

More pie?

Pie in the face of The Nerdery from The Nerdery on Vimeo.

Video highlights I thought I got while the camera was on “pause” rather than “record:” Mike Derheim’s young son not really recognizing some strange man disguised in pie, and a presidential-looking Luke Bucklin fretting about mussing up his tuxedo/ruining his prospects at a later-scheduled job interview. Also noteworthy, our other co-founder Mike Schmidt sidestepped pies entirely. He’s on vacation and it was widely agreed that his $500 donation bought him the right to remain on holiday – and safe distance from pie (but we’ll keep the recipe on file).

Internal “I told you so!” memo leaked

A couple months ago I stayed up late writing an all-staff email. By the time I awoke it had been leaked, right here on this blog. Some of it somehow ended up in Twin Cities Business magazine. Psst, hey, WikiLeaks, my staff more recently found this in their inbox:

All,

As you may have heard, we have been honored with the #1 ranking in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal‘s Best Places To Work awards project. This ranking is a result of your responses to a web-based survey earlier this year. Your survey responses earned us the #1 ranking in the “Medium Companies” category, which includes companies with 100-1,000 Minnesota employees.

Let me finish by saying, “I told you so!” But let me start by saying a bunch of other stuff that leads up to my dramatic finish (which is when I will say, “I told you so!”).

Over the past few years we have become players on the local and national Business Awards Circuit. It is true that we nominate ourselves for awards all the time. 40% of Mark Malmberg’s job is to keep redialing business magazines to try and win prizes, such as “Be our 25th caller and win # 1.471 in the Inc. 5000 List!” Many years ago, I was recognized in the Business Journal‘s prestigious “40 under 40″ award thanks to a much younger Mark Malmberg’s redialing skills. Dialing a 1-800 number over and over using a rotary phone takes dedication and lubrication. That was back when Mark was youthful. Nowadays, the other 60% of his job involves him banging his cane on the ground and complaining about “those darn kids with their WiiTari games!” Please take no offense – that’s just an old man’s cry for help. And by “help,” I mean 16 individually-wrapped Werthers Originals candies in a small dish on his desk where a young person would normally keep an optical mouse.

Enough about Mark; let’s talk about us for a little while. We have grown at a rate that outpaces most business in the country. We have managed this growth organically, meaning we haven’t grown through acquisition or by means of investment capital. In our growth, we have been recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in Minnesota, as well as in the country. We should all feel proud for our growth achievements, but our growth only tells part of our story. Our growth is about dollars, not about people. The Inc. 5000 and Biz Journal‘s Fast 50 don’t measure us by how many jobs we have created, or how happy people are with those jobs. But those things are a priority for us over pure revenue growth.

As proud as I am of our revenue growth, and our recognition in both the Inc. 5000 and the Fast 50, our recognition as a “Best Place to Work” is a more significant accomplishment for all of us to be proud of. Though Mike Derheim will take credit for the black “Suggestions Box” in the lunchroom, this working environment has always been a collaborative effort and everyone here is responsible for our culture. You took the survey, and overwhelmingly gave your co-workers, your managers and the leadership high rankings. Furthermore, you took the time to provide positive commentary regarding the company’s strengths, weaknesses and food/beverage selection. As a result of your input, we were awarded first place in the project, and that tells a more complete story.

I don’t have a plan for your workplace enjoyment, and I can’t tell you how we will continue to be an awesome place to work as we grow, but that’s exactly how we got to where we are today. Pentathanerd, Light the Light Walk events, Game Night, Overnight Website Challenge,  user groups meetings, and Bottle Cap Talk (formerly Minh’s Friday Fiesta) don’t make for a fun, respectful and caring community – they are a result of it. This award is all about you and your Interpersonal Awesomeness, and you damn well better keep it that way as we grow or your whole nerdy community will become flooded with a bunch of gossiping, back-stabbing disrespectful Prima Donnas and when it implodes, I will stand upon the heap of social rubble that remains and yell, “I told you so!”

- Luke

For the third year in a row we’re on Inc. Magazine’s list of America’s fastest growing, privately owned companies. Inc. saves trees by featuring only the Inc. 500 in its print edition, so here’s us in Inc.’s inkless edition, and here’s how our publicist has marked the occasion.

Pentathanerd Summer Games Wrap

To manage the expectations of Pentathanerd’s casual fans, the video below contains footage of Air Quote Quiz Show contestants reciting pi from memory (and rambling off as many digits as possible). Nerdery historians will consider this must-see TV, as will Pentathanerd Fantasy League players, but the casual fans will instead watch and re-watch Pinewood Lego Monkey Ball.
