Cognitive biases

Designers, marketers, advertisers, and anyone who has to sell people on ideas and concepts should make sure to take a look at this slideshow that simply and clearly explains cognitive biases. Specifically read through the section on the 42 decision-making biases. Sometimes it’s nice to know what you could be up against when you’re pitching to a client. Knowing the basic arguments people will have against your idea/project/design/concept will help you come up with counter arguments before you even present.

Trust me, it’s really fascinating (and humbling at the same time). A tip before you start, download the PDF so you can zoom in on that teeny, tiny type that explains the 19 social biases (and be forewarned downloading the PDF is kind of a pain in the butt, but well worth the effort).

Happy Nerd Pride Day

You may not know it, but while we here in the states are celebrating Memorial Day, the wider world is getting out their lights and decorations for International Nerd Pride day on Monday. It’s great that everybody is getting on board, but we want to make it clear that around here, it’s Nerd Pride Day all year round.

Have a good weekend!

Collection of Science & Tech Ads from the 50s and 60s

This is a beautiful collection of ads for science and technology (found via Coudal). I love the modernist design, the sexism of some of the ads I could do without.

You can see the entire set on Flickr put together by BustBright.
