The evolution of space suits

With today’s launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour we only have on more launch before NASA “embarks on something new.” What’s that new thing? I don’t know.

What I do know is that National Geographic has a pretty rad slideshow depicting depicting the evolution of space suits. It’s worth a look only to see how some astronauts went into space clad in outfits that look like glorified Capri Sun packaging.

Speaking of outer space and exploration, you can still take part in Sevnthsin’s BESPIN project.

Finally, Stefanie Gordon snapped this pretty cool picture of the launch from her plane.

Everyone’s crazy about a sharp-dressed nerd

It’s a little-known fact that when it comes to the latest in nerd fashion, the Webchallenge is akin to fashion week in Milan. That’s right, for two days the center of the nerd-fashion world turns its eyes to St. Paul Minnesota to see what the best-dressed nerds are wearing this year. And, just for you we have a peek at what you’ll see on the best-dressed geek in your life this season.

Drop Shadows Not Bombs

Drop Shadows is representing with a class black tee featuring typography and imagery reminiscent of the some of the pest Communist propaganda posters that are so right now.

JWT League of Embetterment

The Justice League more like the Suckstobeus League. Any fashion-forward nerdware connoisseur knows the only league you want splashed across your chest is the The JWT League of Embetterment. This t-shirt sports a classic star and circle emblem popular with the most with-it superheroes.

Concrete5.mn

Concrete5.mn is rocking it old school with the heather gray t-shirt featuring their logo encircled by the great state of Minnesota. And, as you can see, they rock it nerd-school for the back.

Ratchet

Rumor has it that Heidi Klum said she wants to wear this look hot off the runway. Ratchet is paying homage to the chilly Minnesota spring with this sweatshirt bearing their logo.

Full Court WordPress

Full Court WordPress makes a bold statement in forest green. What’s that statement? We’re hot!

T.S.T. Media

These T.S.T. Media shirts that pay homage to E.T. are so fierce that not only are we smiling with our eyes, we’d totally give them all a pound of Reese’s Pieces for being so fabulous.

Rainbow Ponycake

Ever the rebells of the nerd-runway, Rainbow Ponycake shows that you don’t have to be sporting a t-shirt to make fashion statement. We love the sweatbands (and matching wristbands).

Webchallenge Nonprofits, Webpros, and Volunteers

There’s no chance of a fashion faux-pas at this webchallenge because all of the ridiculously good-looking nonprofit members, webpros and volunteers are sporting the very latest for the House of Nerd. Sweet!

Dispelling a myth about nerds

For years nerds have been plagued with the myth that they’re poorly dressed spazes with too short pants and tape on their glasses. As if! Take a look as two of our most-fashionable nerds in action.

Wolf Shirt Friday

As nerds we, of course, live on the cutting edge of not just technology, but also fashion. Friday some of our more fashion forward residents held an impromptu fashion show here at the office. Fresh off the runways of Paris and Milan, I give you Wolf Shirt Friday.

The discerning eye will spot some kittens, a dragon covered with a Post-it, a bear driving a pickup, but you should know, those guys are wearing a wolf shirt on the inside.

In honor of the auspicious event, our traditional Friday bottlecap talk was enhanced with Wolf vodka and Blue Moon ale.

Act now and with expedited shipping you can join us this Friday…

Who are you wearing? A Fashion Report from Web Challenge 09

A few weeks ago Trip Shakespeare my cubemate and the man who spent a great deal of time organizing today’s event was telling me about all the stuff I could be doing to help him, I ignored him. Instead, I asked if I could set up a red carpet outside the University of Minnesota’s Continuing Education Building and shout “What are you wearing” at the nerds and the nonprofits as they came in.

He said no.

But I should have done it anyway, because so many of the teams here have come decked out in custom-made t-shirts displaying their team names with pride.

Thus, I present you some of the best dressed at the Overnight Website Challenge.

Code Cowboys

The Code Cowboys kept it clean, classy, and basic by sporting a traditional black t-shirt featuring white text. I believe that’s a Pacman ghost featuring a western-style bandana. Yeeha!

Team Inetium

Team Inetium knows you can never go wrong with a good, old-fashioned, never-goes-out-of-style white t-shirt with black text. The bold black text seems to harken back to the 80s prompting Tim Gunn* to hum a few bars of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. Clearly a good thing, right?

Ruby.mn 2.2

After the subdued colors of the Code Cowboys and Team Inetium seeing a shock of scarlet on the Ruby.mn 2.2 team was a delicious change of pace. The irregular border around the square and the gleaming sparkle on the ruby are the kind of details this fashion reporter likes to see.

Praxis

Call Crocket & Tubbs because the Praxis team is bringing turquoise back, and not a moment too soon as far as we’re concerned. A refreshing break from the traditional black, white, and red of the other teams we would love to see more of these kinds of bold fashion choices on the snow-covered carpet of the web challenge.

Rein in Sarcoma

Rein-In Sarcoma, originally uploaded by The Nerdery.

We would be remiss in our fashion rundown if we did not include the delightfully whimsical ensemble worn by volunteers from the Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation. Featuring a merry-go-round horse in gold and royal blue, this shirt turned a lot of heads on the carpet today.

The Official T-shirt of the Overnight Website Challenge 09

Sleep is for the weak, originally uploaded by The Nerdery.

The nerds at Sierra-Bravo who designed this shirt threw caution to the wind and made a bold statement by including both white and red text on a black t-shirt. The shirt is a big winner with nerds and nonprofits alike. Whoever came up with that “Sleep is for the Weak” slogan is definitely one smart cookie.

*Tim Gunn didn’t actually hum a Wham! song upon seeing Team Inetium’s t-shirt. Tim’s not even here, but we like to think that he would hum a little ditty if he were here.
