Back in Beige

TIME Magazine’s Techland blog is reporting that the Commodore 64 is back. Many nerds back in the early 80s cut their teeth on the old school keyboard that was a computer, but the new one will allegedly feature a 1.8 GHz Intel processor, up to 4GB RAM, and a bunch of other stuff not dreamed of in the 80s.

This blogger remains skeptical, because that Commodore USA website has to be some kind of joke. Right?

So yes, allegedly it’s back in beige. It remains to be seen whether it will be back on track or lead the pack (or if you will recognize lyrics from the seminal AC/DC song).

Pour one out for Ed Roberts, credited with inventing the PC

Over the weekend lost in the hubbub of the iPad was an obituary for H. Edward Roberts a

“He created the MITS Altair, the first inexpensive general-purpose microcomputer, a device that could be programmed to do all manner of tasks. For that achievement, some historians say Dr. Roberts deserves to be recognized as the inventor of the personal computer.”

The NY Times is an interesting read (thanks to Kottke for pointing it out) that includes bad blood, old wounds, and death bed reconciliations. It’s like a Lifetime movie for nerds.
