Five years of Twitter

Probably the coolest thing about Twitter’s fifth anniversary today is that founder Biz Stone is going to be on Conan tonight. The second coolest thing, getting the actor who played Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks to be in the faxu-documentary on Funny or Die.

However, if you like facts more than fun, try this non-faux report from Bloomberg on the history of Twitter (I didn’t embed it because it autoplays and scares the crap out of you when it does). More facts? Twitter shared numbers about the growth of the service. Some of them are kind of stunning including these two:

  • 460,000. Average number of new accounts per day over the last month.
  • 456. Tweets per second (TPS) when Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009 (a record at that time).

Sadly, the number of social media experts seems to be incalculable.
