MSP WordPress user group does some pro bono “WordPress ninja stuff” for DesignWise Medical

The Minneapolis-St. Paul WordPress user group meets tomorrow evening here at The Nerdery, and we mark the occasion by showcasing the good deeds that 10 of their members (team Full-Court Press) did at The Overnight Website Challenge for DesignWise Medical, a nonprofit pediatric device company.

MSP WordPress ninjas help DesignWise Medical at Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge from The Nerdery on Vimeo.

MSP WordPress meetings are free and open to the public; you need not be a developer to check it out from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday. There’ll be a session on creating basic WordPress plugins. Please RSVP so we know how many pizzas to order.

Visitors: The Nerdery is open during construction, but please note that we’ve recently knocked down walls to liberate/occupy some much needed adjacent office space.

Happy Nerd Pride Day

If-I-Ran-The-Zoo
That’s right, May 25th is Nerd Pride Day. Make sure to hug your favorite nerd, and maybe give him or her a cookie.

Pixel: A pixel art documentary

A short 11-minute documentary about pixel art and early video games. There’s talk about Mario and how he got his bushy mustache (as you know Mario’s a particular Nerdery favorite), and how pixel art is more relatable (where Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics is name-checked).

PAC-MAN Hack

google

Once we realized that the PAC-MAN game on Google’s homepage was all Javascript, we (Ken) couldn’t resist modifying it. In our version the ghosts can’t move. We also disabled Blinky (the red one) so you can pass right through him.

Here is how to run our custom version.

  1. Use Firefox
  2. Install the Greasemonkey plugin
  3. Run this script which will use our code instead of Google’s
  4. Go to Google and start racking up a high score without the fear of dying

Earlier today, Google tweeted about getting to level 256. I don’t know if they’ve hidden something secret in there, but now you have got a chance at getting that far.

If you are ambidextrous, click the Insert Coin button one more time and you can play as Ms. PAC-MAN with the WASD keys and still control PAC-MAN with the arrow keys.

Agency Primer: Designing for Web Workflow

webproductionprimer
“You’re the designer” is an oft-recited mantra at The Nerdery as we defer to agencies we serve. As their dutiful web nerds, we focus on developing our agency partners’ design and vision.

But The Nerdery has designers too, and we have them so we can make sure the process of bringing your design to life with HTML, CSS, and a bunch of other acronyms is smooth and pixel perfect. Our next agency primer webinar, Designing for Web Workflow, will give you tips and tricks to make your web production smoother.

RSVP for either Tuesday, May 25th at 10:15 AM CST webinar or Thursday, May 27th at 3:15 PM CST.

These sessions will be led by two of our senior interface designers They’ll spew free advice on how to create design that is ready to rock-n-roll right into web production. In our one-hour webinar we’ll cover:

  • designing for interactivity
  • preparing files for a seamless handoff
  • nerd’s-eye perspective on layouts, fonts, and industry standards
  • tips and tricks to get the most out of Photoshop when designing for the web

Like all our Agency Primers, the webinar is free! RSVP today.

Cognitive biases

Designers, marketers, advertisers, and anyone who has to sell people on ideas and concepts should make sure to take a look at this slideshow that simply and clearly explains cognitive biases. Specifically read through the section on the 42 decision-making biases. Sometimes it’s nice to know what you could be up against when you’re pitching to a client. Knowing the basic arguments people will have against your idea/project/design/concept will help you come up with counter arguments before you even present.

Trust me, it’s really fascinating (and humbling at the same time). A tip before you start, download the PDF so you can zoom in on that teeny, tiny type that explains the 19 social biases (and be forewarned downloading the PDF is kind of a pain in the butt, but well worth the effort).

Conan cubed: the making of

Conan O’Brien has a certain nerd cred to him, and he’s in Minneapolis for a gig, so why not try to coax him into a Nerdery visit by recreating his likeness (twice) on 156 Rubik’s cubes. Watch us pander to him:

Closed circuit to Coco: Come to The Nerdery. Sign these cubes. Be immortalized.

Hardcore fans of competitive Rubik’s cube competitions, Memory Lane beckons. Revisit these Rubik’s artists when they were athletes in this Pentathanerd flashback.
