Zeus Jones with some help from a Sierra Bravo nerd took home the grand prize at last night’s finals of Microsoft’s PhizzPop Design Challenge at SXSW in Austin, TX. The Zeus Jones/Sierra Bravo team competed against agencies from Miami, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles to, “deliver a digital experience or experiences that will engage the Austin, TX community to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.”
While many of last night’s presentations focused on recycling and making your home more energy efficient, Zeus Jones’ presentation took a different approach. They focused on getting the people of Austin to make the most of what they already have. This is a simplified version of the entire concept. You should just watch Christian Erickson’s presentation:
Also, if you’re really curious you can see a demo of the mobile app he talks about at Usemore.us.
Okay, I’m going to get a little marketing wonk on you here. What’s so great about this PhizzPop win for us, is that it so perfectly illustrates exactly what we do at the Nerdery — work with agencies to bring their brilliant, creative ideas to life. So, in case you didn’t know before now you do.
And, if you haven’t quite had your fill of hot ad agency on nerd action, make sure to check out this piece from the gang at Minnov8 featuring our own Tom O’Neill and David Annis from Zeus Jones:
If you don’t care about basketball but are entertained by advertising, Ad Week has a set of brackets for you. March ADness pits the commercials of the NCAA against each other in a tournament bracket. Each day you can vote for the commercial you like best. On April 3rd the best commercial will be crowned.
Because I’m super nerdy, I’ve already watched all the commercials and filled out my bracket. You should go do it now, too, so I have someone to brag about beating.
(HINT: Coke Zero does very well using humor, ESPN moves on because of it’s use of Guns N Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” and MLB 2K9 gets by because of Wang Chung)
Here we have a picture of Matt who appears to be drawing the Pixar logo on the whiteboard wall. What you don’t see is that Jess had drawn the word Pixar on the wall earlier in the day. However, Matt could not abide having a less than stellar reproduction. If you look closely you’ll see has a printout of the Pixar logo in his hands.
That’s us, nerds who always strive for perfection.
THIS JUST IN! Matt has shared a picture of the original logo drawn on the wall:
And, if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the trailer for Up, the new Pixar movie due out in May.
One of my fellow nerds (hi, Dave!) sent me a Wordle for Inside the Nerdery. I wasn’t surprised to see robots and charlatans represented, but I am not sure where all this button nonsense is coming from.
Astrological Sign: Virgo (please refrain from nerd/virgin jokes)
Time at the Nerdery: Longer than Aesop and I haven’t even thrown up on the floor yet.
Area of expertise: Internet.
When people ask you what you do, how do you respond: Drummer for my Rock Band band, Rasberry Caturday. We have a gig every Friday at The Nerdery. Come check us out. (I program stuff too.)
Favorite kinds of projects to work on: Anything that does not involve spelling Raspberry correctly.
What one thing about The Nerdery surprises people the most when you tell them about it: That we actually get work done.
Seven dream Jeopardy Categories: 1. Settlers of Catan; 2. Words Justin can’t spell; 3. Rock Band DLC recommendations (all answers take the form of “Who is Phil Collins”); 4. Laughable “Heroes” Plotlines; 5. Zend Framework; 6. Losing at Bug House; 7. There are only six categories per round in Jeopardy!*
Favorite Fictional Nerd: I like my nerds non-fictional, thank you very much.
According to the Wikipedia entry on Nerd, some nerds show a pronounced interest in subjects which others tend to find dull or complex and difficult to comprehend, or overly mature for their age, especially topics related to science, disambiguation, mathematics and technology. Do you know what disambiguation is: Hey, I edit Wikipedia.
*Editor’s note: In my defense, I ripped off the idea of the dream Jeopardy categories from Douglas Coupland’s 1995 novel Microserfs where the characters list their seven dream Jeopardy categories
Hey, you can go watch Zeus Jones (and one of our nerds) on Monday as they present their final PhizzPop Design Challenge project at SXSW. The Zeus Jones crew has hooked up a live feed that they’ll have going at Cosmos at Graves Hotel. Get the full details and RSVP.
This will be a three part series on skinning Flex components. For part one I have chosen to dissolve the myth that Flex 3 can’t truly cascade styles. This three part series will start simple and get more complex with each post. You can use this code to mimic descendant selectors, dimensioning and multiple class names within Flex.
Problem:
Flex can’t do true cascading styles like HTML (for example a black play button)
Solution:
YES, flex can do cascading styles. It just requires a different approach. A programmatic approach. Don’t worry, I assure you that even a non-programmer can pick this one up.
Lets dive a little deeper. Cascading styles refers to the ability to start with a button, style it into a black button then go a step further and make it a play button. First, create a button and use some CSS to style various properties of that button. Read more
The Nerdery has been busy, busy, crazy busy lately. So busy, in fact that we’ve had actual content on Fridays instead of the weekly link dump. Now comes a busy meeting Monday, and a perfect time to get rid of these great stories that have been burning a whole in my virtual pocket.
MinnPost – Here's a niche business: designing fonts:"There's this greater design community with all the ad agencies and design firms downtown, and the natural byproduct are the specialists," Diesel said. "We do look over each others' shoulders, and that's a very unique thing to do."
News from the Herd: What's all this "branding" stuff about?: “This presentation by Marty Neumeier of San Francisco brand firm Neutron pretty much says it all in 20 minutes. It gives a definition and then provides a blueprint so that you too, by slide 120 or so (don’t worry, it’s one of these one word per slide numbers), will be the market leader in your category!”
Man Vs Machine: Robot Programmed to Love Traps Woman in Lab, Hugs Her Repeatedly: “The trouble all started when a young female intern began to spend several hours each day with Kenji, testing his systems and loading new software routines. When it came time to leave one evening, however, Kenji refused to let her out of his lab enclosure and used his bulky mechanical body to block her exit and hug her repeatedly. The intern was only able to escape after she had frantically phoned two senior staff members to come and temporarily de-activate Kenji.”

50 Things Every Mac Geek Should Know | Mac|Life: “Like a champion cyclist knows bike parts,a car buff knows model years, and a sports fan knows win-loss records, all Mac geeks worth the title must know these things.”
From Outcast to Awesome: 17 Famous Nerds Who Paved the Way: “>In a different age, the label Nerd induced visions of tapered, high-water jeans, thick-framed glasses, and preppy, ill-patterned shirts. Oh, the horror! Now, check out the East Village on a typical weekend and what are the most stylish gents donning? Why, tapered jeans, thick-framed glasses, and button-down shirts! My, my, my, how things have changed!”
USATODAY.com – Psychologists now know what makes people happy: The happiest people surround themselves with family and friends, don't care about keeping up with the Joneses next door, lose themselves in daily activities and, most important, forgive easily.
Robots – The Big Picture – Boston.com: “Robotic systems continue to evolve, slowly penetrating many areas of our lives, from manufacturing, medicine and remote exploration to entertainment, security and personal assistance. Developers in Japan are currently building robots to assist the elderly, while NASA develops the next generation of space explorers, and artists are exploring new avenues of entertainment. Collected here are a handful of images of our recent robotic past, and perhaps a glimpse into the near future. (32 photos total)”
Five Myths about Content Strategy: “Yes, page flows and imagery play a huge part in shaping the online user experience. Without clear navigation and a pleasing page layout, a user's experience could hardly be considered positive. But many site owners fail to see that content plays an equally important role to structure and design in this regard. As Julie Hayden tells us in her piece on A List Apart, language is the ultimate user interface. The tone of a site and the consistency of voice can make or break a user's impression. Language is a very flexible and adaptable tool that should be used to your advantage on your website.”
Featured Workspace: Land of the Colorful Cubes:”The size of their cube farm is modest, but the personality of it is enormous. Employees at The Balcom Agency would appear to have nearly free reign in customizing their work space. In the work spaces below you'll see everything from vivid color selections to personalized bookcases to curtains and couches and everything in between.”
